Yin yoga is a slow-paced style of yoga that targets the deepest tissues of the body - ligaments, joints, bones & fascia (Fascia is the thin casing of connective tissue that surrounds and holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fibre and muscle in place it can also carry emotional stress so it’s important to keep it happy!) Poses are held for longer periods of time than other styles of yoga. Beginners generally hold poses from 45 seconds to 2 minutes, however, as you develop your practice you will find your body will be able to hold poses for longer periods, sometimes over 5 minutes. Yin is a calming and balancing practice that encourages a deeper sense of relaxation that can help reduce stress and anxiety. To help ease us into the space of Yin we begin each class with a breathwork exercise. This helps us arrive at a place of presence and stillness and many of these techniques have proven to help increase lung capacity, reduce blood pressure and ease feelings of anxiety or worry.
